As I write this devotion, I am reminded of growing up in a Christian home, playing Church. I attended because it was mandated by my parents and as I grew older, influenced by the circle of those I was engaged with. The truth is, the fire of eternity did not burn in my heart because I was in denial about where I would spend eternity. In fact, I discarded the thought process completely from my mind.
The Word of God declares: “The waywardness of the simple will kill them, and the complacency of fools will destroy them.” (Proverbs 1:32) This scripture is indeed true, and we need to guard against spiritual complacency and settling for just being saved. As Christ followers, we need to prayerfully ask for the fire of eternity to burn in our hearts and when it does, we:
- Reject and hate anything that represents sin in our lives – I recall a time when I always boasted about my sinful habits to my circle of influence. A healthy fear of God should draw us closer to Him as we daily meditate on His Word. We are certainly not going to be perfect, but sin will begin to lose its appeal gradually.
- Reflect more often on where we will spend eternity – This requires an intentional thought process. Acknowledge that we all have an appointment with death of our body, some day. When that happens, will we gain the whole world and lose our soul, or will we gain eternity and lose the whole world.
- Remember that God’s grace is available for ALL – The Scriptures are clear that God does not want anyone to perish but everyone to come to repentance. Hence, we must pray for our unbelieving family members, friends, neighbors, and the world. God will break our hearts for what breaks His and show them the love of Jesus!
Christ follower, my prayer for you is that God will ignite the fire of eternity in your heart, in Jesus Name, Amen! If you are currently not a Christ follower, don’t be deceived by the god of this age – the grace and the love of God is available to you today – come!
All glory to God!
