Lord, Give Me a Thankful Heart

My friends, I don’t know about you, but I sometimes take the goodness of the Lord in my life for granted because I get so focused on what He is yet to do, rather than focus on what He has already done. As a result, I must daily ask God to give me a thankful heart. As Christ follower, giving thanks should not be a choice for us but a MUST.

Foremost, the salvation of our soul, through the blood that Jesus Christ shed on the cross of Calvary, should cause us to be perpetual thanks givers.

Secondly, seeing and experiencing a new day should motivate us to give thanks to God for the gift of life. Think about it, what can we accomplish without the gift of life? We cannot enjoy fellowship with our loved ones, get that business deal, have a successful career, marry, acquire wealth, make merriment or whatever our goals and aspirations are in life.

We are reminded in God’s Word in 1 Thessalonians 5:18 to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Our daily thanksgiving acknowledges that:

  • Everything we own is a gift from God – Our salvation, life, health, possessions, talents, time and so on, and we are not taking God’s goodness in our lives for granted.
  • We are to choose to walk in obedience – Giving thanks to God is an act of obedience to His command. Think about it, what can we give the God Who has and owns everything other than our thanksgivings, love and praise. Besides, we are practicing for heaven because we’ll be joining the host of angels giving thanks for eternity.

Let us daily pray that God will give us a thankful heart in all the situations and circumstances of life. If you are currently not a Christ follower, come and receive Him as your Lord. Offer Him your act of thanksgiving to Jesus who died on the cross for you by giving your life to Him.

All glory to God!
