Obedience is Better Than Sacrifice

My friends, a Bible character whose life was characterized by disobedience was Saul and the consequences of his actions led to God rejecting him as king of His people Israel. I encourage you to read the full account of this story in 1 Samuel 15.

It is against this backdrop of disobedience to the will of God that Samuel the Prophet reminded Saul in 1 Samuel 15:22But Samuel replied:“ Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams”.

You see, Saul did not start out as being disobedient, but he became complacent and it cost him his throne. As Christ followers, we need to be careful and guide against the trap that satan sets for us to walk in disobedience to God by:

  • Using the word of God as a shield – We need the shield of His word to correct and minister truth to us when we are going astray.
  • Being receptive to correction – It is important not to excuse away our wrong doings when God points them out through His word. Best if we embrace it, ask for forgiveness and restart. The Bible warns us that he who covers his sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy (Proverbs 28:13).
  • Not craving public opinion – The only opinion that should count in our decision-making process should be God’s opinion. Public opinion is fickle and unstable and will certainly lead to disappointment. However, decision and action based on the word of God is solid as rock, unmovable, unchanging and perfect.

Christ follower, intentionally walk in obedience to the will of God for your life and when you fail, repent and start again. If you are currently not a Christ follower, living a life out of God’s will is disobedience and nothing good will come out of it. I know, I have walked this path too. Embrace the salvation that is freely given today.

All glory to God!
