My friends, if we are going to be honest with ourselves, the issue of pride versus humility is a battle we all struggle with. It creeps into our lives and can often be subtle in nature.
The word of God warns us against the consequences of pride and the benefits of humility in Proverbs 11:2 “When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom”.
Pride and humility set in when we think we are better than someone else (because of our position in life) or think less of ourselves (because we don’t have the right status). The traits could be spiritual in nature and an example could be thinking we are holier than others because of some particular spiritual gifts that God has given us or false humility.
Whatever the case may be, we must daily and prayerfully ask the Holy Spirit to help us identify, repent and overcome anything that represents pride or false humility in our lives. Doing so acknowledges that:
- God owns everything – It is all a gift from Him – our life, salvation, money, possessions, talents, time or anything causing us to walk in pride or false humility. We should therefore use such gifts to bring God glory.
- We fear God – Our goal in life as Christ followers is to be more like Jesus in our actions, words and deeds. Living our lives here on earth with an eternal perspective where pride and false humility do not have a place.
Christ followers, may God help us all to be more like Him daily, walking in the spirit and not fulfil the desires of the flesh. If you are currently not a Christ follower, humility is the fear of the Lord – come and accept Christ into your life today.
All glory to God!
