Embracing God’s discipline

Friends, naturally we see discipline in a negative light – not so when we are disciplined by God.

In my walk with the Lord, I have been disciplined for my disobedience many times and each time it happened, the experience was not always pleasant.  However, as I look back, I see nothing but God’s mercy and faithfulness. This gives me reason to be thankful that He chose to discipline me.

The Bible reminds us in Hebrews 12:5-6 that “And have you completely forgotten this word of encouragement that addresses you as a father addresses his son? It says, “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines the one he loves, and he chastens everyone he accepts as his son”.

The discipline of God provides:

  • Evidence of His love toward us – I don’t know about you, I would rather have God discipline me than someone else – because his discipline comes with mercy and compassion.
  • Growth in our Christian walk – When God disciplines us, we are able to see clearly the consequences of our actions and often, these consequences draw us closer to God.
  • Freedom from sin – Often when we are disciplined in our actions, we are more cautious the next time we are faced with similar situations – I am thankful for this.

Christ follower, always remember that when God disciplines you, it is ultimately because He loves you – so embrace His discipline.  If you are currently not a Christ follower, come and enjoy the freedom that the discipline of God brings.

All glory to God!
